Strangles is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by Streptococcus equi. It is the most comman bacterial infection of horses. Once inside premises, it may spread quickly through direct contact between animals or indirectly via equipment, staff hands and clothing. Early diagnosis is therefore of utmost importance.

Sample submission instructions:
  1. Samples for microbiological culture should preferably be submitted in transport medium where possible and within the shortest time possible
  2. Samples for PCR may be received with or without transport medium
  3. Samples for ELISA must be a clotted serum sample (blood bottle should not contain anticoagulant)
